You Are My People
There’s a common phrase that is used in today’s world - “You’re My People.” I’m not even sure that is grammatically correct, but according to the urban dictionary it’s used to describe when you find people who share a common interest or bond with you. For example, “I like Starbucks” “Really? Me too!” “I found my people!”
When I was younger, I thought I’d found my people. Oh, I had great friends, but when you look for your people, it takes more than a liking of Starbucks to truly rank as “my people.” I didn’t know way back then the trendy phrase like I do today, nor did I realize I needed to find my people. But as I matured I felt a void. I wanted to find people who didn’t just talk about surface topics. I needed meat. Not the pleasantries you share with the grocery checker. I wanted to be challenged, matching wit to wit. Graciously, the Lord provided me with a group of friends that became “my people.” And to this day, even though that circle of friends have changed at times, those who surround me as my closest and dearest friends are known as my people.
How do I define “my people?” They are those who “get” me. My people get me. They also have got me. They have my back…and front…and sides. Over the past three years of my life, my people have been the ones who have been through the roughest times of my life and are still here. When my pride keeps me from asking for help, they make the asking seem like a blessing. I know they’ve got me and I’ve got them. Though I can’t do much for them physically right now, I pray I can be there for them in every other way. When you have your people, there is an unspoken covenant that you are there through thick and thin, no questions asked.
In the Old Testament in the book of Exodus, God spoke to Moses about the children of Israel. They were enslaved in Egypt, In Exodus 6:6-7, God said, “Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment. I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians.” God declared the the Israelites were His People. Or in today’s lingo, God said, “You are My People.”
This was just one covenant God made with His People. But what if you aren’t an Israelite, God’s chosen people? God had a plan all along to send a rescuer who would come to earth so that all people - Jew and Gentile (non-Jew) - could be God’s people. We read in John 3:16, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” And that verse speaks volumes. We are God’s people if we believe in Jesus.
You might be searching for a way to fill a void in your heart, and the void can only be filled by Jesus. The comfort of hearing someone say “You are my people!” is what God is saying when He gave His only Son to come to earth, die, and be resurrected so we could have eternal life with Him.
